The expert group to finalize and agree on the draft Joint Statement on Practical Measures to Prevent an Arms Race in Outer Space held an online meeting on July 31.
The meeting brought together representatives of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Uzbekistan, and the CIS Executive Committee.
The experts finalized the draft Statement initiated by the Russian side and decided to submit it to the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers’ next regular meeting for consideration.
The draft Statement notes that the CIS member states engage in the exploration and use of outer space in the interests of promoting international cooperation and mutual understanding, maintaining international peace and security, and support broad joint efforts by the international community to further develop the relevant international legal framework.
The document expresses serious concern over the real prospects of an arms race in outer space and its transformation into an arena of military confrontation, which would weaken global stability. It emphasizes the utmost importance of taking immediate practical measures to prevent an arms race in outer space.
