On April 17, 2026, a meeting of the Council of Foreign Ministers of the Commonwealth of Independent States was held in Moscow. The meeting was opened and chaired by the Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs of Turkmenistan, Ahmed Gurbanov, who presided over the Council.
Traditionally, the meeting was held in narrow and expanded formats.
In the restricted format, the heads of foreign affairs agencies exchanged views on current issues of the international agenda and interaction within the Commonwealth.
During the consultations, a broad exchange of information and views took place on issues of:
- foreign policy planning;
- multilateral economic diplomacy;
- coordination of positions of the CIS member states on the agenda of the 80th session of the UN General Assembly;
- countering new challenges and threats;
- export control and non-proliferation;
- interaction of the CIS member states with African countries;
- interaction in the information sphere;
- cooperation in the fields of culture, science, education, sports, tourism, and youth policy;
- interaction within UNESCO, with the European Union, and other multilateral European organizations.
The members of the Council adopted decisions on:
- declaring 2028 the Year of Social Development and Quality of Life in the Commonwealth of Independent States;
- the draft Protocol on amendments to the Implementing Protocol to the Agreement on Cooperation of the CIS Member States on the Return of Minors to Their Permanent Residence States of October 7, 2002;
- the implementation of the Plan for Multilevel Inter-MFA Consultations within the CIS and the Action Program to Intensify Partnership between the Foreign Policy Agencies of the CIS Member States in 2025;
- the CIS basic organization in the field of information support for education systems of the CIS member states;
- the CIS basic organization in the field of adult education and educational activities;
- awarding the Certificate of Honor of the Commonwealth of Independent States;
- the Joint Statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CIS Member States on the occasion of the 65th anniversary of the first human space flight;
- the Interstate Fund for Humanitarian Cooperation of the CIS Member States;
- the Statement of the Ministers of Foreign Affairs of the CIS Member States on the situation in the Persian Gulf region.
The next meeting of the CIS Council of Foreign Ministers is planned to be held in October in Turkmenistan.
