Inter-MFA consultations “On Cooperation among CIS Member States on the Agenda of the 81st Session of the UN General Assembly” were held in Minsk on June 23.
The consultations were attended by representatives of Azerbaijan, Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, Turkmenistan, Uzbekistan, and the CIS Executive Committee.
The meeting participants emphasized the importance of strengthening the role of the United Nations as the key mechanism for multilateral cooperation and addressing global challenges in the emerging multipolar world order. They also exchanged information on their national priorities and initiatives for the upcoming session of the UN General Assembly.
The participants stressed that initiatives aimed at reforming the United Nations, including its Security Council, should command consensus support of the Member States and fully meet their interests. It was emphasized that the reforms should enhance the authority and effectiveness of the Organization. Undermining the intergovernmental nature and “division of labor” among the principal organs of the United Nations is unacceptable.
In addition, the participants supported the need to optimize the Organization activities by eliminating duplicating functions and redundant structures. But this process should be transparent and carried out under the close oversight of the member states and in their interests. The importance of maintaining a balance among the UN’s key areas of activity was also emphasized.
The participants agreed to continue regular consultations on the UN agenda issues on both bilateral and multilateral bases.
