The Third Maqom Art International Forum opened in Namangan, Uzbekistan, on June 23, 2026. The Forum brought together traditional maqom music performers from 30 countries.
CIS Secretary-General Sergey Lebedev sent his greeting to the forum organizers and participants. He emphasizes that holding the Forum dedicated to one of the most distinctive and profound manifestations of the musical heritage of the East is of particularly importance for strengthening humanitarian ties between peoples and promoting the unique traditions of national cultures.
“Maqom art, which embodies centuries of wisdom, philosophy, poetry and musical mastery, is an invaluable part of the world’s cultural heritage,” the greeting reads.
It also notes the symbolic significance of the Forum being held in Uzbekistan, a country with a rich history and a remarkable cultural heritage.
“The city of Namangan, which is hosting the Forum’s participants and guests, is renowned for its warm hospitality and uniqueness. This beautiful part of Uzbekistan surrounded by picturesque landscapes is rightfully considered one of the spiritual and cultural centers of the region,” the CIS Secretary-General said in the greeting.
He also called the Forum a platform for open dialogue and creative exchange. Through music and art, an atmosphere of mutual understanding and respect for national cultures and traditions is formed. These values have always been and remain a strong foundation of relations among the peoples of the Commonwealth countries.
Sergey Lebedev expressed confidence that this year’s Forum would bring participants and guests vivid impressions, new ideas and the inspiration for further creative endeavors.

Maqom art is a unique musical phenomenon of the East, a vocal and instrumental genre characterized by extensive use of improvisation and a cyclical structure. In 2003, maqom art was inscribed on UNESCO’s Intangible Cultural Heritage List.
The first Maqom Art International Forum was held in 2018 at the initiative of President of Uzbekistan Shavkat Mirziyoyev. The Forum aims to promote, preserve and develop maqom art, increase young people’s interest in this unique genre, strengthen friendship among peoples, expand cultural and spiritual ties, and foster international creative cooperation.
