The Institute of World History of the Russian Academy of Sciences, together with the Marjani Institute of History of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, is organising an international workshop for young historians from the CIS member states in Kazan. The workshop will run from 21 to 28 September under the theme “Historical Memory of the CIS Member States: Conflicts and Consensus”.
The workshop will bring together nearly 80 specialists representing leading historical research and educational institutions of Armenia, Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan and Uzbekistan.
The event will help historians from the CIS member states:
- explore whether a common historical memory exists across the Commonwealth;
- analyse the characteristics of the development and transformation of the post-Soviet narrative in the late 20th and early 21st centuries;
- identify areas and ways of reaching consensus on points of debate and differing interpretations of the processes and events that make up the common past of the CIS member states during the periods of the Russian Empire and the Soviet Union.
The workshop includes a roundtable under the theme “Historical Memory and Identity: Mechanisms of Formation and Transmission in the 19th and 20th Centuries”. The roundtable will consider general questions concerning the evolution of the content of collective memory in its close relationship with the questions of identity in the context of world history in the 19th and 20th centuries.
The organisers expect the workshop to become a platform for constructive dialogue among various national historiographies.
The workshop will open at 10 a.m. on 22 September 2026 at the Marjani Institute of History of Tatarstan Academy of Sciences, 7A Baturina Street, Kazan.
