In honor of the 81st anniversary of the Victory of the Soviet people in the Great Patriotic War of 1941–1945, a joint initiative by the Commonwealth Executive Committee and the Council of Permanent Plenipotentiary Representatives of the CIS Member States is underway in Minsk. Participants are visiting memorial sites that commemorate the feats of Heroes of the Soviet Union who were natives of the CIS countries.
On April 30, a memorial meeting was held in Minsk dedicated to the memory of Zhumash Asanaliev, Hero of the Soviet Union, native of Kyrgyzstan.
On May 4, a memorial event was held in honor of Gulyam Yakubov, Hero of the Soviet Union, native of Uzbekistan.
On May 5, a solemn wreath-laying ceremony took place at the Victory Monument in the center of the Belarusian capital, and also to the memorial plaque of Hero of the Soviet Union, native of Turkmenistan Oraz Annaev.
On May 6, participants of the joint initiative honored the memory of two Soviet marshals whose names are inextricably linked with the history of the liberation of Belarus from Nazi German invaders.
Also on May 6, a solemn ceremony was held dedicated to the memory of Hero of the Soviet Union, native of Azerbaijan, Najafgulu Rafiyev.
On May 7, Permanent Representatives of the Commonwealth countries and representatives of the CIS Executive Committee laid flowers at the memorial plaque in honor of Hero of the Soviet Union, native of Armenia, Gazaros Avakyan.
Also on May 7, a solemn memorial meeting was held dedicated to the memory of Hero of the Soviet Union, native of Tajikistan, Domullo Azizov.
On May 9, a solemn memorial meeting was held at the obelisk in memory of soldiers – citizens of Kazakhstan who fell in the battles for Belarus.
On May 9, President of the Republic of Belarus Alexander Lukashenko took part in a wreath-laying ceremony at the Victory Monument in Minsk. Permanent Representatives of the Commonwealth states and representatives of the CIS Executive Committee also participated in the ceremony.
On May 14 a requiem meeting and a solemn flower-laying ceremony were held in the Belarusian capital at the monument to the Moldovan soldier, Hero of the Soviet Union Ion Soltys.
