Ambassador of Tajikistan to Russia: Tajikistan’s Peace Can Serve as Model for Resolving Internal Conflicts Worldwide

A presentation of the United Nations General Assembly resolution International Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations initiated by President of Tajikistan Emomali Rahmon was held in Moscow.

In accordance with the resolution, the UN General Assembly proclaimed the period 2027–2036 as the International Decade for Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations.

Introducing the UN General Assembly resolution, Tajikistan's Ambassador to Russia, Davlatshoh Gulmahmadzoda, stated that the document is based on the peaceful experience of Tajiks.

“Having endured the tragedy of civil war in the 1990s, the people of Tajikistan succeeded in achieving peace and harmony. This experience of national reconciliation has been recognized by the United Nations and the international expert community as one of the most successful and effective examples of overcoming internal conflicts in modern history,” the diplomat said.

The Ambassador of Tajikistan highlighted the role of Russia and other CIS member states in helping to end the civil war. Davlatshoh Gulmahmadzoda noted that it was during that period that the spirit of mutual assistance within the Commonwealth was demonstrated most vividly.

“This triumph of peace would not have been possible without the support of our closest allies and partners. The peacebuilding efforts of the CIS member states, together with the support of Russia and other Central Asian countries played an enormous role in stabilizing the situation in Tajikistan,” the Ambassador stated.

According to him, Central Asia and the CIS today demonstrate an example of mature and contrastive diplomacy.

Davlatshoh Gulmahmadzoda also emphasized the principle of mutual respect that underpinned the successful settlement of border issues between Tajikistan, Kyrgyzstan and Uzbekistan.

“Our region is becoming a space of trust, stability and good neighborly relations,” he stressed.

The International Decade of Strengthening of Peace for Future Generations aims to promote peace, encourage dialogue and reconciliation, and foster dialogue between generations.

The resolution has been recognized as particularly important at a time when millions of people in different parts of the world continue to face security challenges.

Among other provisions, the resolution reaffirms “the commitment to settle disputes through peaceful means and the determination to save succeeding generations from the scourge of war.”
