MSLU: On the Path to the Centenary

On January 30, 2026, a ceremonial event titled “On the Path to the Centenary”, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of Moscow State Linguistic University was held at the university. Prominent government officials and public figures congratulated the university from the stage of the assembly hall.

Among the guests of honor were members of state authorities, heads of partner and international organizations, renowned scholars, public figures and prominent alumni of the university.

CIS Secretary General Sergey Lebedev sent a greeting to the university. It reads: “On behalf of the CIS Executive Committee, I am happy to greet you all at the event “On the Path to the Centenary”, dedicated to the 95th anniversary of Moscow State Linguistic University and the 25th anniversary of its status as the base organization for the study of languages and cultures of the CIS countries.”

MSLU is a key center of linguistic education for training top-tier specialists in various fields of linguistics. Your university is renowned all across the CIS and far beyond.

Taking into consideration the long-lasting experience and great achievements of the university, on November 30, 2000, the CIS Heads of Government Council made a historic decision to bestow upon MSLU the status of the base organization for the study of languages and cultures of CIS countries.

Your university became the first institution within the CIS to be granted this responsible status. And now, 25 years later, I can confidently say that the university has been adequately fulfilling its role. The base organization makes a considerable contribution to the formation and development of the common educational and humanitarian space of the Commonwealth.

More than once, projects of the base organization have been demonstrated and highly praised at the meetings of the Council for Cooperation in Education of the Commonwealth of Independent States Member States.

In line with the tasks set by the Concept for the Further Development of the CIS, the university consistently perfects its research and educational activities, focusing on developing CIS languages and advancing Russian as a means of interethnic communication.

Addressing the guests of the event, the Rector of MSLU, Professor Irina Kraeva noted: “A rare feeling arises in this hall today—a feeling of a shared destiny. It only happens when a university ceases to exist as a simple form, and becomes a meaning; when it is no longer merely an institution, but a home, professional and heartfelt, easily recognized by its voice, intonation and respect towards the meaning and accuracy the word.”

During the event, an awards ceremony for MSLU staff took place, presenting state, departmental and university honors. The departmental awards were presented by Deputy Minister of Science and Higher Education Konstantin Mogilevskiy.

The Rector's Certificates of Honor were awarded to heads of departments and leading staff of the university. For her constant assistance and significant contribution to the development of MSLU, Head of the CIS Executive Committee’s Press Service Svetlana Malinina received a Certificate of Honor from Rector Irina Kraeva.

Students of the university demonstrated their creative talents to the guests. The “Friendship of Peoples” dance, was performed by students studying languages of the CIS.

For reference

It is worth noting that the university operates nine language and cultural centers of the CIS countries, established in cooperation with partner universities in the Commonwealth. These are the Azerbaijani, Armenian, Kazakh, Kyrgyz, Moldovan, Russian, Tajik, Ukrainian and Uzbek centers. Today they are key research, educational and cultural departments of MSLU.

The base organization effectively implements bachelor’s and master’s degree programs in eight languages of the Commonwealth, carries out various educational projects and initiatives aimed at developing intercultural and interlinguistic ties between our countries.
