CIS First Deputy Secretary-General Igor Petrishenko Participates in Meeting of CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies

The seventh meeting of the CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies was held on February 19 in St. Petersburg.

 

During the meeting, the Council members discussed:

  • electoral events in the Commonwealth states;
  • information on the draft Declaration of Principles for International Election Observation;
  • other agenda items

Addressing the meeting participants, Igor Petrishenko noted that the Advisory Council has become an effective platform for exchanging best practices on improving legal conditions for conducting elections and referendums in accordance with national legislation.

The CIS First Deputy Secretary-General emphasized that facilitating open and free elections based on accepted principles of democracy and the rule of law, as well as objective and impartial observation of electoral processes, are today among the most important areas of political cooperation between the CIS member states.

The Agreement on the Establishment of the CIS Advisory Council of Heads of Electoral Bodies was signed on October 14, 2022, by the CIS heads of state in Astana. The Agreement provides for the comprehensive development of cooperation among the electoral bodies of the CIS countries.
