A meeting of the expert group for the coordination of the draft Concept of the Development of Fundamental Science in the CIS took place on May 12, 2026, at the CIS headquarters.
The meeting was attended by representatives from Belarus, Kazakhstan, Kyrgyzstan, Russia, Tajikistan, and the CIS Executive Committee.
Shamsiddin Koziev, Deputy Director of the Department for Cooperation in Political, Humanitarian and Social Spheres of the Committee, opened the meeting. He noted that the Draft is of great importance in scientific cooperation among CIS countries.
Experts reviewed the comments and proposals on the Draft, submitted by the member states, and finalized and approved the document.
The meeting made a decision to submit the finalized Draft to the CIS Heads of Government Council for consideration.
The initiative to develop such a document was put forward at the 10th meeting of the CIS Council for Cooperation in Fundamental Science in 2022. The Draft was intended to include a long-term vision of the science of the future, comprehensive approaches and systematic actions of CIS member states in the field of science.
In this consideration, in 2025, Russian Academy of Science developed a draft document and the Council approved it on November 19, 2025.
Draft Concept of the Development of Fundamental Science is a specialized document, which elaborates and details the provisions of the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development of the Commonwealth of Independent States for 2026-2035 (in Russian), approved by the CIS Heads of Governments in September 2025 in Minsk.
The Document focuses on the development of fundamental research, which, due to its long-term nature and high degree of uncertainty, is least attractive to private investment and requires coordinated state support.
The Draft aims to create, within the common scientific and technological space of the CIS, an effective environment for generating new fundamental knowledge that will serve as a foundation for fulfilling the tasks set out in the Strategy for Scientific and Technological Development.
